About the Ritual
Namkaran is one of the sixteen traditional sanskars (life-cycle rites) and marks the formal naming of a newborn. Traditionally performed on the eleventh or twelfth day after birth, though many families now choose a date within the first few months based on the child's nakshatra (birth star).
Why to Perform
A name is considered to carry vibration and destiny in Hindu tradition; the ceremony invokes blessings for the child's long life, health and character, and formally introduces the baby to family, friends and community.
Who Should Perform
Performed by the parents, typically at home, with grandparents and close family present. A priest determines an auspicious name (or syllable) based on the child's birth chart if the family wishes to follow that tradition.
