Pitru Paksha Shraddha

A 16-day period of rites honouring ancestors and seeking their blessings.

About the Ritual

Pitru Paksha is a 16-day period in the Hindu lunar calendar dedicated to honouring one's ancestors (pitrs) through Shraddha, Tarpan and Pind Daan. It is believed that ancestors visit the earthly realm during this period to bless their descendants.

Why to Perform

Performing these rites is believed to bring peace to departed souls, remove Pitru Dosha (an astrological affliction linked to unresolved ancestral debts), and bring prosperity and harmony to the performing family, as prescribed in texts such as the Garuda Purana.

Who Should Perform

Traditionally performed by the eldest son or grandson of the family; in the absence of a male heir, other family members may perform it under a priest's guidance.
