Rudrabhishek

A sacred bathing ritual for the Shiva Lingam, chanting the Rudra mantras.

About the Ritual

Rudrabhishek is the ceremonial bathing (abhishek) of the Shiva Lingam with sacred substances — water, milk, honey, ghee, curd and sugar — while the priest chants the Rudra Chamakam and Namakam from the Yajurveda. "Rudra" refers to Lord Shiva's fierce, protective aspect.

Why to Perform

It is performed to seek Lord Shiva's blessings for the removal of obstacles, healing from illness, protection from misfortune, and general peace and prosperity. It is especially popular during Shravan month, on Mahashivratri, and on Mondays (Shiva's preferred day).

Who Should Perform

Open to any devotee; often sponsored by a family for a specific intention (health, career, marriage) or performed collectively at a temple. A qualified priest conducts the Vedic chanting throughout.
