Satyanarayan Katha
A puja to Lord Vishnu invoking truth, prosperity and family harmony.
About the Ritual
The Satyanarayan Katha is a devotional puja performed in honour of Lord Vishnu in his Satyanarayana ("the true, imperishable one") form. It centres on the retelling of five chapters recounting devotees who kept — or broke — a vow made to the deity, and the consequences that followed. The katha is traditionally read aloud to an assembled gathering of family and friends, followed by aarti and the distribution of prasad, usually a sweet semolina halwa called sheera or panchamrit.
Why to Perform
It is performed to give thanks for a wish fulfilled, to mark an auspicious milestone such as a birth, a new home, a promotion or a wedding, or simply as a regular monthly practice — most commonly on a Purnima (full moon) or Ekadashi — to invite truthfulness, prosperity and harmony into the household.
Who Should Perform
Any householder (grihastha) may sponsor and perform this puja; there is no restriction by caste, age or gender. It is usually performed by the family together, with a priest guiding the sankalpa, kalash sthapana and recitation.
