Vivah Sanskar

The Vedic wedding ceremony uniting two families before sacred fire.

About the Ritual

Vivah Sanskar is the traditional Hindu wedding ceremony, centred on the Saptapadi — seven vows taken by the couple as they walk seven steps around the sacred fire (Agni), each step representing a shared commitment for married life.

Why to Perform

Marriage is considered one of the most important of the sixteen sanskars, binding two individuals and families together as witnessed by Agni, the divine fire. It is regarded as a sacred, lifelong partnership rather than merely a social contract.

Who Should Perform

Performed by the bride and groom with their families, guided by a priest who conducts the full sequence of rites according to family and regional tradition.
